Eclectic North West musical showcase night Cityscape Presents returns to Bolton’s Octagon Theatre on Friday 12 December to unwrap some pre-Christmas treats.

The night, hosted by Cityscape Records offers the chance to see up-and-coming acts in the laidback environment of the theatre’s Bill Naughton Studio.

Headliners are Moore Marriott who will be showcasing their perfect pop including tracks from forthcoming EP The Catcher which will be released on Cityscape early next year.

They boast soulful songs with infectious arrangements – Elliot Smith, Neil Finn and Badly Drawn Boy are cited among their influences – and will be playing as a five-piece featuring banjo, guitars, flugelhorn, cello and double bass.

Next up are the intriguing Kirsty McGee & Mat Martin whose songs of vagrancy and restlessness havebeen described variously as reminiscent of a Coen Brothers film and as “Simon and Garfunkel – the Tim Burton version.” If it’s musical rather than cinematic references you’re after, think folk noir, Tom Waits, John Martyn, Boo Hewerdine…and go on, you can have an author – Jack Kerouac – as well.

Opening up proceedings will be brother and sister duo Liam Carter and Lauren Carter-Bridges who peform as Get Carter. The Bolton born-and-bred siblings’ talents developed when they were thousands of miles apart, Lauren in England writing songs while Liam was on the other side of the world in Queensland, Australia. They credit a 24-hour flight, many arguments and magic ‘Mozart’ voice-saving liqueur with the alchemy that resulted in their infectious lo-fi pop.

Comedian Lou Conran, a feature on what she calls the “Manchesterford” comedy scene since 2005, will be compere for the evening.

Brad B Wood, founder of Cityscape Records, said: “Once again we’re delighted to have some talented and varied acts grace the stage.

“Moore Marriott are a great band who I love so much I signed them! Seeing them live is always great so I’m looking forward to the night very much.

“I first met Kirsty when my band Merchandise supported her friends’ band Truckstop Honeymoon in Bolton. They’d recorded her music in Kansas and, with Mat Martin, she’ll be a real treat!

“Get Carter first came to my attention when Kat Dibbits of The Bolton News sent me an early demo. I heard the potential straight away and knew I had to get them on.”

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £9 for adults (£7 concessions), are available from the Octagon box office. Call 01204 520661 or buy online at www.octagonbolton.co.uk

Cityscape Presents 11th October – Press Release

Filed under: Blog,Press — Brad at 8:45 pm on Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Cityscape Presents 11th October – Press Release

Three will be the magic number on Saturday 11 October as Bolton-based Cityscape Records hosts three acts for its third showcase of emerging musical talent. The first two Cityscape Presents events at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre provided some captivating performances enjoyed by full houses in the venue’s intimate Bill Naughton Studio Theatre.
Number three, headlined by Cityscape band Merchandise with Ist and Dan Melrose completing the bill, promises to be every bit as much of a treat. Comedian Dale Meakin, a familiar face on the Manchester comedy circuit, is compere for the evening.
Merchandise return to the Octagon fresh from performances at the Sugarhill festival in Wiltshire and Manchester’s Night and Day. A new full band line-up, welcoming new members John A Stewart on bass and Matt Maher on drums, gives added oomph to their acoustic sound.
They will be previewing songs from forthcoming album For The Masses, including feelgood favourite Sometimes and soon-to-be-released single Enemy. Both can be heard on their MySpace site and are available from Itunes, HMV and other outlets.
Leicester band Ist, who cite influences ranging from Cole Porter to the Pixies, will be playing tunes from their new album Toothpick Bridge which features former members of the Beautiful South and Chris Difford’s solo band. Readers of Mojo magazine voted singer Kenton Hall as one of their 20 top ‘songwriters of substance’ in 2006.
Opening the evening is Manchester folkster Dan Melrose, a talented acoustic guitarist whose live band features an array of instruments including double bass, cello, harmonica and violin.
Brad B Wood, Cityscape founder and member of Merchandise, said: “The feeback from our first two events has been excellent and I’m really looking forward to introducing Dan and Ist to the Octagon audience.
“I saw Dan at a Manchester folk night and knew straight away I had to get him on. He’s got a hell of a way with an acoustic guitar and I’m sure anyone who comes along will see why I was so impressed.
“I first met Ist years ago when my former band Mazeppa were playing on the same bill as them at the Cavern Club. We’ve been friends since and I’m a big fan of their music. Their latest album is their best yet.
“As for Merchandise, we’re really happy with the development of our live sound and looking forward to sharing it.”
The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £9 for adults (£7 concessions), are available from the Octagon box office. Call 01204 520661 or buy online at www.octagonbolton.co.uk

A showcase of some of the best of the North West’s up-and-coming bands returns to Bolton’s Octagon Theatre on June 21 after the success of last month’s sold-out inaugural event.

Headliners at the second Cityscape Presents evening are The Loungs, a band described by Word magazine as “the best thing to come out of St Helens since the East Lancs Road.” NME called their sound as “heart stopping trippy folk” but however you describe it there’s no denying that it oozes joie de vivre.

And with Merchandise and Moore Marriott completing the line up on the night , put on by Bolton-based Cityscape Records in the theatre‘s Bill Naughton Studio, promises to be the perfect sunny-sounding soundtrack to the summer solstice.

Merchandise’s melodic pop has regularly been described as “summery” and latest single Sometimes, out now, provides the perfect introduction. Music Week magazine described it as “a breath of fresh air.”

Opening the evening are acoustic four-piece Moore Marriott. With influences including Elliott Smith, Neil Finn, Ed Harcourt and Badly Drawn Boy ,they deliver soulful songs with infectious arrangements. Banjo, cello, melodica and trumpet are among the instruments featured.
